Connecting Point’s Medford location closed Easter Sunday (April 20)

Easter bunnyConnecting Point closes just five days a year – and this coming Sunday is one of them.

Since our Bend location isn’t open Sundays, this announcement applies only to our Medford store. Enjoy the weekend, and we’ll see you Monday!

Connecting Point’s email is down, but here’s an alternate method of contacting us

PLEASE STAND BYSERVICE BULLETIN: Our Medford location had a mysterious, destructive power outage and surge over the weekend. One casualty was our mail server, which suffered a fried logic board. This server provides email service for both our Bend and Medford locations. As a result, we’ve been unable to send or receive email at any of our “.connpoint.com” addresses.

We’ve got a replacement logic board coming in via overnight freight, and we hope to be up and running again later today (Tuesday). In the meantime, you can reach us via the email form on our Contact page.

Sorry for any inconvenience, and thanks for your patience.

UPDATE APRIL 15, 2014 | 11:55 AM: Our mail server has been repaired, and email service has been restored.

Connecting Point proudly supports 13th ashland independent film festival (aiff) | Apr. 3-7, 2014

aiff 2014 (ashland independent film festival)The ashland independent film festival is five days of the highest-quality independent film, held in historic Ashland, Oregon. The Washington Post called it “a dream you’ll never want to leave.” Every Spring, Southern Oregon buzzes with the excitement of the aiff. Over 7000 film lovers gather at the historic art-deco Varsity Theatre, in the heart of downtown Ashland, to watch over 80 films in five days.

This year’s guests include Emmy-winning actor Ty Burrell (Modern Family) and two-time Oscar-winning filmmaker Barbara Kopple (Harlan County USA, American Dream).

Filmmakers of documentaries, features and shorts from around the world come to engage with the audience after each screening, and at the festival’s Opening Night Bash and Award Celebration parties with local wine, beer and artisan food. Special guests have included Helen Hunt, Albert Maysles, Bruce Campbell and more. This year’s guests include Emmy-winning actor Ty Burrell (Modern Family) and two-time Oscar-winning filmmaker Barbara Kopple (Harlan County USA, American Dream). The film festival is one of the reasons Ashland is included in the popular travel guide A Thousand Places to See Before You Die.

Connecting Point returns for its second year as a sponsor, providing iMac computers and a wireless printer for the festival’s Hospitality Suite. We urge you to support the thriving arts community in our area. Visit the aiff website to see the rich variety of films being presented at this year’s festival. Better still, pick up some tickets and celebrate independent cinema with like-minded folks in Ashland! It all kicks off this Thursday, and runs through Monday.

The time is World Backup Day. Do you know where your files are?

World Backup Day 2014Don’t be an April Fool. Be prepared: Back up your files today, March 31st – World Backup Day.

Take a moment to imagine what it would be like if everything on your computer, tablet, or phone went away – permanently disappeared – 30 seconds from now. This is not some rare nightmare scenario. Devices are manmade, and things made by the hand of man must someday fail. It is known.

In other words, it’s not a question of “if.” It’s a question of “when.” And when it does happen, how badly would it hurt you?

Take a moment to imagine what it would be like if everything on your computer, tablet, or phone went away – permanently disappeared – 30 seconds from now.

Fortunately, there are simple, sensible steps you can take to make this a total non-issue. If you have a Mac, you have an app called Time Machine that makes keeping a current, local backup of your computer easy as pie. Windows 8.1 comes with a similar program called File History. In both cases, you’ll need an external hard drive dedicated to the task. Connecting Point can help you select the perfect external drive to fit your system and budget, with prices starting well under $100.

But to really, truly protect your photos, home videos, music, emails, and documents, you’ll want to supplement this local backup with an off-site one. As it happens, we offer a safe, affordable, and simple solution: SafeBox Automated Online Backup. For less than seven dollars a month, your important stuff is seamlessly, continuously backed up over broadband connection to a secure, remote location. Fires, floods, and wayward pets cannot touch your precious information. You can read all about SafeBox here.

So visit the World Backup Day site. Take the pledge. And sleep easier tonight, knowing your data is safe.
